Emily Spiera, B.A. 2016

Medical Student at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

2016 Major: International Comparative Studies

How has being an ICS graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Studying ICS at Duke opened my eyes to the large-scale influences (cultural, economic, and beyond) that impact the lives of peoples across the world. My major inspired my interest to pursue my minor in global health, and both disciplines have continued to play a role in my career goals in medicine. I have continued to explore population health and global health experiences and research. As examples, I am concurrently getting a Master's in Public Health and am the head of a clinic serving underserved immigrant communities in New York."

What advice would you give students in Duke's International Comparative Studies programs?

"This major can be applied to many different career paths - don't self-limit the scope of what you can do with it!"
