"Friends of Japan": African American Women's Visions of Afro-Asian Solidarity

This presentation examines how African American women engaged Japan during the early twentieth century. It foregrounds the ideas of a cohort of women who envisioned political collaborations with Japanese people as a strategy to combat racism and global white supremacy.

When Patriarchy Unsettles Itself: Women in China's War of Resistance against Japan, 1937-1945

With a focus on women who worked in the medical profession during China's eight-year war with Japan, this talk examines the role that chaos and upheaval played in expanding women's opportunities to resist patriarchy, even as the war reinforced gender norms.
